Outdated protocols. Chronic symptoms. And a healthcare system stuck in the past while your body keeps the score.

The Elephant in the Exam Room
Let’s talk about the thing no one wants to say out loud—especially in the cold, fluorescent silence of your average medical office:

The system is failing you.

Not because your doctor’s a bad person. Not because you didn’t ask the right questions. But because the model they’re trained in is broken.

It’s outdated. It’s reactive. And when it comes to chronic illness, hormone chaos, or the pile-up of midlife symptoms women face daily—it’s just not cutting it.

This system was built for a different era. A time when infection was the biggest threat, and the solution was simple: find the bug, kill it, move on. That worked great… until it didn’t.

Now we’re living longer but feeling worse. More women are exhausted, inflamed, underdiagnosed, and dismissed than ever before.

And the treatment? Suppress the symptom. Call it aging. Hand you a pill and hope for the best.

If you’ve ever felt like the only person actually living in your body—you’re not crazy.

You’re just waking up to a truth that too many still ignore.

Let’s unpack it.

A System Built for a Different Era

Outdated Tools for Modern Problems

If you’ve been told that Type 2 diabetes is just about “too much sugar” or “not enough exercise,” you’ve only heard chapter one of a much bigger story.

Here’s the script most women hear:

Modern medicine wasn’t built for you.

Not the you with thyroid issues no one’s tracking, the unexplained weight gain, the “normal” labs that don’t explain why you feel like hell. Not the you navigating menopause, autoimmunity, or metabolic chaos.

The system you walk into today? It was designed over a century ago—when people were dying from things like tuberculosis and pneumonia. When antibiotics were a miracle. When doctors were trained to spot the bug, prescribe the drug, and move on.

And it worked—for acute infections.

But here’s the problem: we’re not dying of infections anymore. We’re living with slow, complex, chronic conditions. Things that don’t have a quick fix.

Heart disease. Type 2 diabetes. Hashimoto’s. Chronic fatigue. Inflammation. Conditions that aren’t caused by a germ—but by layers of lifestyle, trauma, hormones, and dysfunction.

Yet medicine is still trying to use the old “find the thing, kill the thing” approach. As if your bloating, burnout, or brain fog can be solved with a prescription pad and 7-minute appointment.

It’s like using a flip phone to run a modern business.

Outdated model. Outdated mindset. And women are paying the price.

You Can’t “Pill Away” a Chronic Condition

The System Isn’t Built for Women Like You

Let me tell you what happens every single week in my studio.

A woman walks in, exhausted and discouraged. She’s been to three, five, sometimes seven doctors. She’s been told everything is “normal.” Her bloodwork is “within range.” Maybe she got handed an antidepressant. Or a statin. Or both.

But what she didn’t get? Answers. Support. A single person who asked: “What’s really going on here?”

She’s not sleeping. Her hair’s falling out. She’s gained 20 pounds without changing her diet. She’s anxious for no reason. She doesn’t feel like herself. And every time she speaks up, the message is the same: It’s just aging. It’s in your head. Learn to live with it.

Theresa was one of those women. Her weight felt out of control. She was miserable. But once we started peeling back the layers—looking at hormones, metabolism, inflammation, lifestyle—she dropped 20 pounds and finally understood what her body needed.

Michelle came in barely able to get off the floor. On stomach meds. Wearing compression socks. One week into my program, the meds were gone, the socks were off, and she was moving again. Why? Because we addressed the root cause.

This is not magic. This is not extreme. This is what happens when we stop slapping pills on symptoms and start doing the damn work.

The truth? Most women aren’t broken. They’re just being failed.

Doctors Are Trained to Manage, Not Heal

It’s the System. Not Always the Doctor.

Let me be clear: this isn’t about bashing doctors.

Most of them got into medicine because they wanted to help. They work long hours, face burnout, and carry massive responsibility.

But they’re trained in a system that’s 17 to 25 years behind current research. They’re taught to diagnose, prescribe, and move on. Not to listen deeply. Not to investigate root causes. Not to treat the whole person.

When a woman walks in with fatigue, mood swings, stubborn weight, and hormonal chaos, what happens? She’s told her labs are “fine.” Maybe she’s handed an antidepressant, a sleeping pill, or a statin. Maybe she’s told to lose weight—without any real support.

That’s not healing. That’s management.

It’s like throwing a bucket of water on a fire alarm and calling the fire “handled.” Meanwhile, the house is still burning down.

This isn’t healthcare. It’s disease control.

And women? We’re the ones paying the price.

One-Size-Fits-None Care Is the Real Problem

Your Body Deserves Better Than a Diagnosis Code

Here’s the hard truth: your care is being designed around your diagnosis—not around you.

Once the system gives you a label—hypothyroid, diabetic, menopausal, depressed—it stops looking. You’re put in a box. Given the standard-issue protocol. Same meds, same advice, same dead ends.

But every body is different. Your genetics. Your stress levels. Your trauma history. Your gut health. Your hormones. Your life.

None of that fits in a checkbox on a clinic intake form.

Take ten women with fatigue and weight gain. Same symptoms. Totally different root causes. Yet the system hands out the same pills and tells them all to “eat less and move more.”

That’s not medicine. That’s mass production.

Real healing happens when care is personalized—when we stop chasing symptoms and start asking why your body is struggling in the first place.

Because your body isn’t failing you. It’s talking to you.

And it’s time someone actually listened

What You Can Do Instead

From Passive Patient to CEO of Your Health

Let’s be honest—most of us were raised to trust the system.

To follow orders. To be “good patients.” To wait for someone in a white coat to tell us what to do.

But if you’re still reading this, you already know: That model doesn’t work anymore.

So what now?

You stop waiting. You stop outsourcing your intuition. You start leading.

Here’s what that can look like:

Ask for copies of your lab work—and learn what those numbers really mean.

If something feels off, trust it. Advocate. Push for better testing.

Learn the basics of hormones, metabolism, and how your body actually works.

Start eating and moving in ways that support your unique physiology.

Work with practitioners who see you as a whole person.

Track your symptoms. Notice patterns.

Prioritize nervous system support—because no healing happens in survival mode.

This isn’t about becoming anti-medicine. It’s about becoming pro-you.

Let’s Stop Normalizing Dysfunction

It’s Not “Just Aging.” It’s a Broken Model.

If you’ve been told:

“Your labs are fine.”

“It’s just stress.”

“You’re getting older.”

“Here’s a pill—see you in six months…”

Then hear this loud and clear: You are not crazy. You are not lazy. You are not broken.

You are living in a system that wasn’t built to help women thrive.

You don’t need permission to start. Just curiosity, courage, and a willingness to question the old rules.

You Don’t Get Type 2 Diabetes from Eating a Cookie

Let’s set the record straight:
You don’t develop Type 2 diabetes because you had dessert.
You develop it because your hormones stop talking to each other properly.

Most women over 40 who get hit with a “pre-diabetic” or “Type 2” label are told the same tired story:
“Eat less, move more. You’re just insulin resistant.”

But here’s the truth they’re not telling you:
Type 2 diabetes isn’t just about insulin.
It’s about broken communication between your gut, pancreas, and liver — and it starts years before your blood sugar spikes.

Insulin becomes ineffective.
Glucagon (your other blood sugar hormone) runs wild.
Your gut stops sending proper signals.

And this dysfunction?
It doesn’t just affect your blood sugar — it impacts your metabolism, energy, cravings, brain health, fat storage, and even your mood.

This article is going to show you the real story — the one most doctors were never taught.
Let’s flip the script on diabetes and show you how to take control.

Now your body can’t respond to insulin properly.

So, it’s your fault — diet and exercise, end of story.

Sound familiar?
It’s the guilt-and-shame model of medicine. And it’s outdated.

Yes, insulin resistance is real.
Yes, lifestyle matters.
But what causes that resistance? And why do some women with healthy habits still end up prediabetic?

Because Type 2 diabetes isn’t a one-hormone problem.
It’s a multi-hormonal breakdown — and the first thing to go wrong isn’t always insulin.

Modern research shows that long before insulin resistance sets in:

Incretins (gut hormones like GLP-1) start misfiring

Glucagon (the hormone that raises blood sugar) becomes dysregulated

Your liver starts dumping sugar when it shouldn’t

And your cells stop responding to the normal hormonal cues

So no, this isn’t just about willpower.
This is about biology, and more importantly — about fixing the broken system, not just blaming the person living in it.

The Gut-Pancreas-Liver Axis

Let’s break this down like a real-life situation — no white coat needed.

Imagine your body is a high-functioning office. After every meal, your gut plays the role of a communications manager. It sends an urgent email to the pancreas and liver:

“Food has arrived. Blood sugar is going up. Please release insulin to open the cells and let sugar in — and hey liver, chill out. No need to dump more sugar right now.”

In a healthy body, this message is delivered by incretins — gut hormones like GLP-1 and GIP. And the team responds like clockwork:

The pancreas sends insulin to shuttle sugar into your cells.

The liver shuts off its sugar faucet (glucagon goes quiet).

Blood sugar stays smooth, energy stable, and appetite satisfied.

Now, picture that same office with a broken email server.

The gut sends the signal… but it’s delayed, distorted, or never arrives.

The pancreas is slow to release insulin — or doesn’t respond properly.

The liver never gets the “stop” memo — so it dumps even more sugar into the blood.

Meanwhile, glucagon (which should be suppressed after a meal) is still shouting “We’re starving!” when you’re clearly not.

The result? High blood sugar, low energy, and total miscommunication.

That’s what’s really going on in Type 2 diabetes:
A hormonal team that’s gone rogue — because the gut, pancreas, and liver stopped speaking the same language.

The Incretin Revolution — And Why Ozempic Isn’t the Full Answer

Now that you know your gut hormones are the real messengers after a meal, let’s talk about the real power players: GLP-1 and GIP.

These incretin hormones are supposed to:

Boost insulin only when needed

Shut down glucagon (so your liver doesn’t flood your blood with sugar)

Slow digestion (no sugar spike)

Tell your brain, “We’re full — stop eating”

In a healthy body, that system is brilliantly orchestrated.
But in Type 2 diabetes? It’s like the symphony has lost the conductor.

Here’s what happens:

GLP-1 levels are blunted

GIP is present, but the body stops responding to it

The brain never gets the fullness signal

Glucagon stays in “panic mode”

Blood sugar and appetite spiral

Enter the new class of drugs:
GLP-1 receptor agonists — like Ozempic, Wegovy, Trulicity, and Mounjaro.

They mimic your natural incretin hormones to:

Trigger insulin when you eat

Suppress glucagon

Slow digestion

Reduce appetite

And yes — they work. Very well.

But here’s the hard truth:
They’re not a fix. They’re a Band-Aid.

What’s happening right now is medical outsourcing of responsibility.
Instead of investigating the root causes of poor incretin function — gut dysbiosis, inflammation, metabolic stress — doctors are defaulting to prescriptions.

No guidance on fixing the diet.
No education on blood sugar responses.
No encouragement to rebuild the body’s natural hormone balance.

Just another script.

Is that helping people? Maybe temporarily.
Is it healing them? No.

And worst of all — these drugs were meant for serious cases, not “quick weight loss for tired women over 40” who are never told about the lifestyle-based root fixes.

We’re not against medications. We’re against using them as an excuse to avoid real healing.

The Hormonal Chaos in T2D: What Most Doctors Miss

Most people — including many healthcare professionals — still believe Type 2 diabetes is just a problem of insulin resistance.

But that’s only part of the dysfunction.

Behind the scenes, your body is dealing with a hormonal tug-of-war — and nobody’s winning.

Let’s break it down clearly:

Hormone

What Should Happen

What Happens in Type 2 Diabetes

Insulin

Rises after a meal to move sugar into cells

Starts high (compensating), then fades as cells stop responding

Glucagon

Suppressed after a meal (no sugar dump from liver)

Stays high even after eating — liver keeps releasing sugar

GLP-1 / GIP (Incretins)

Signal insulin + suppress glucagon

Blunted or ineffective → poor hormonal control

In healthy bodies, insulin suppresses glucagon.
But in T2D, that suppression fails. So you get double trouble:

Sugar can’t enter the cells efficiently (thanks to insulin resistance)

Meanwhile, the liver keeps adding more sugar to the blood (thanks to high glucagon)

And guess what drives that glucagon dysfunction even more?
A poor gut microbiome, chronic inflammation, lack of movement, constant snacking, and high stress.

It’s like your internal system is short-circuiting —
and no one’s stopping to ask why.

Most treatment plans don’t even address glucagon at all.
They focus only on lowering blood sugar — without asking what’s causing it to stay high in the first place.

That’s not medicine. That’s micromanagement.

The real fix starts with reconnecting these hormones — insulin, glucagon, and the gut hormones that are supposed to keep them in sync.

The Functional Medicine Plan: Fix the Root — Not Just the Numbers

You don’t reverse Type 2 diabetes with willpower.
You do it by retraining your hormones to talk to each other again.

That means repairing the communication between your gut, pancreas, liver, and brain. Here’s the framework I use with clients — but the magic is in personalizing it.

1. Repair the Gut-Pancreas Signal

Your gut hormones (GLP-1, GIP) drive insulin and glucagon. If your gut is inflamed or your microbiome is off? Game over.

Support Tools (available in my Fullscript pharmacy):

Berberine (improves GLP-1, mimics metformin)

Targeted probiotics: Akkermansia muciniphila, Bifidobacterium breve

Prebiotics: PHGG, inulin

Bitter herbs: Dandelion root, gentian tincture

2. Improve Insulin Sensitivity

Make your cells respond again — that’s real healing.

Support Tools:

Magnesium (glycinate or citrate)

Chromium picolinate

Alpha-lipoic acid

Daily movement: post-meal walks, resistance training

3. Calm the Glucagon + Liver Overdrive

Your liver is dumping sugar because it’s stuck in survival mode. Let’s fix that.

Support Tools:

Inositol (for blood sugar + liver balance)

Milk thistle, NAC, turmeric (for liver function)

Strategic fasting (only if safe for you)

Fewer snacks = fewer “false alarms” for your liver

4. Lower Cortisol + Balance the Brain

Stress hormones block insulin and spike blood sugar. If you’re always on edge, your glucose will be too.

Support Tools:

Adaptogens: Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, Holy Basil

Nervous system reset: deep breathing, 10 minutes of stillness

Sleep support if needed (GABA, magnesium, herbal blends)

5. Eat to Support Hormones, Not Just Cut Calories

Blood sugar stability starts with what you eat and when — not how little.

Focus on:

Protein + fiber at every meal

Healthy fats (avocado, olives, nuts)

Smart carbs (quinoa, lentils, berries)

No seed oils, no processed junk

I use professional-grade supplements in my practice — no random Amazon picks, no guesswork.
But here’s the thing: every woman’s body is different. Your health history, medications, gut health, hormones, and even your stress levels all affect how you respond. That’s why we don’t guess — we test, assess, and build your plan together.
You’ll get access to my Fullscript pharmacy once we start working 1:1 — and I’ll guide you through exactly what to take, when, and why.

Practical Steps: Love Your Body & Still Level Up

Here’s how to lead your health—not just follow trends. These steps are practical, hormone-smart, and built for midlife resilience.

Track What Actually Matters

• Full lab panel (not just “normal” TSH or cholesterol) • Track energy, digestion, sleep, strength—not weight • Journal mood patterns, especially during cycle changes

Fuel for Function

• Protein at every meal (aim for 30g+) • Carbs with fiber and color—ditch the low-fat myth • No more yo-yo dieting or undereating

Strength Train Weekly

• 2–4x/week of strength-focused training • Choose weights or bodyweight—you need muscle, not sweat • Progress over perfection

Move Daily

• Walk, stretch, bounce, breathe • Not to punish—but to energize and restore

Audit Your Environment

• Unfollow the noise (yes, even “body positive” ones if they’re dismissing your health) • Upgrade your health team—don’t stay loyal to dismissiveness • Protect your energy like your hormones depend on it—because they do

Get Support

• Don’t DIY your hormones or metabolism • Work with someone who gets women’s biochemistry • Ask for help, get a plan, and stop spinning

The Tests That Actually Matter (And Most Women Never Get)

Let me say it louder for the women in the back:

Fasting glucose and A1C are not enough.

If that’s all your doctor is running and then slapping a “you’re fine” label on you — they’re missing the storm that’s brewing years before full-blown Type 2 diabetes shows up.

Here’s what I run (or help you ask for):

1. Fasting Insulin

This is the red flag test. You can have normal blood sugar but sky-high insulin — and that means trouble is already here.

2. HOMA-IR

Calculates how resistant your cells are using your glucose and insulin levels. Crucial for early metabolic insight.

3. HbA1c

Yes, it matters — but only in context. You can look fine here and still be insulin resistant.

4. CRP + Ferritin

Chronic inflammation blocks hormone signaling. These show how inflamed your system is.

5. GI or Microbiome Testing

Your gut health controls your incretins. If your microbiome is off, your metabolism is too.

Want someone to actually interpret these for you — not just “read the range”?
Book your consult here

Final Truth Bombs & Action Steps

Here’s what I want every woman reading this to walk away with:

Type 2 diabetes is not just a sugar problem.
It’s not a personal failure.
It’s a breakdown in hormonal communication — between your gut, your pancreas, your liver, and your nervous system.

You don’t need another guilt trip.
You need someone who actually understands how to read your body’s signals, not just your lab ranges.

Here’s what most women are never told:

You can have “normal” blood sugar and still be metabolically unhealthy.

You can feel tired, inflamed, and foggy before the diagnosis ever hits.

You don’t have to wait until it’s “bad enough” to take control.

Ready to take the next step?

I work with women 40+ who are done guessing and ready to rebuild metabolic health from the inside out. No generic plans, no fad diets — just science, personalization, and real-life strategies that work.

The Weight Loss Miracle That Comes with a Catch

Imagine this: You’re scrolling through social media, and there it is—another post about Ozempic. Celebrities are using it. Your friend’s coworker lost 30 pounds on it. Even your neighbor’s dog walker is talking about it. You start wondering… Should I try it too?

Lately, some of my clients have even told me their doctors offered to put them on Ozempic for weight loss—no diabetes, no prediabetes, just because they wanted to drop a few pounds. And honestly? That’s a little concerning.

Ozempic, an injectable medication originally designed for diabetes, has taken the weight loss world by storm. And to be fair, it does work. But before you start dreaming about effortlessly shedding those stubborn pounds, let’s talk about what nobody seems to mention—the fine print that comes with this so-called miracle drug.

How Ozempic Works (And Why It Sounds Too Good to Be True)

Ozempic works by boosting GLP-1, a hormone that slows down digestion and reduces hunger. Translation? You eat less, crave less, and—boom—weight loss happens. It also helps regulate blood sugar and improves insulin resistance, which is great for diabetics. Sounds like a dream, right?

But here’s the part no one puts in bold letters:

It’s expensive. Think $1,300 to $1,500 per month. Ouch.

The side effects list is longer than your grocery receipt. We’re talking nausea, vomiting, bloating, headaches, gas (yes, the glamorous kind), constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, and heartburn.

Oh, and the major side effects? Let’s just say they’re not exactly minor. Pancreatitis, kidney disease, thyroid cancer, muscle loss, gastroparesis (basically, food gets stuck in your stomach and refuses to move), and even… suicidal thoughts.

Not feeling so magical anymore, are you?

And let’s not forget—what happens when you stop taking it? Many people not only gain the weight back but also deal with lingering side effects for up to five weeks. So unless you’re planning to inject yourself for the rest of your life, this might not be the long-term solution you’re looking for.

Meet Berberine: The Natural Alternative That Works Without the Drama

Now, what if I told you there’s a plant-based option that mimics Ozempic’s effects without the scary side effects and without the shocking price tag? Enter Berberine—a natural compound used in traditional medicine for centuries.

Studies show that Berberine can be as effective as Metformin (a popular diabetes drug) in improving insulin sensitivity and reducing blood sugar. And just like Ozempic, it helps regulate appetite and supports weight loss.

Unlike Ozempic, however:

It’s natural. No injections, just a supplement.

It doesn’t come with a laundry list of scary side effects. (Unless you count mild stomach upset if you take too much too soon.)

It won’t drain your bank account. A month’s supply costs about as much as your weekly latte habit.

You can purchase professional-grade Berberine through my online pharmacy, FullScript:

LILIA’S PHARMACY – GET PROFESSIONAL GRADE SUPPLEMENTS TO YOUR DOOR

Now, you might be thinking, Why not just grab any Berberine supplement from Amazon? Here’s why: Not all supplements are created equal. FullScript is a Canadian pharmacy that supplies only professional-grade supplements tested by third parties—no fillers, no heavy metals, no garbage. Just clean, potent, high-quality Berberine that does what it’s supposed to do. Because when it comes to your health, you deserve the best.

But let’s be real—no supplement is a magic bullet. The real key to weight loss in midlife isn’t just taking something. It’s balancing hormones, eating right, moving your body, and working with your metabolism—not against it.

That’s exactly what I focus on in my 12-Week Full Body Transformation Program. I help midlife women lose weight as a side effect of becoming truly healthy—through personalized nutrition, fitness, mindset shifts, and targeted supplementation (like Berberine, when needed). Because let’s face it: you deserve a solution that works for you—not just a temporary fix that leaves you worse off in the long run.

Final Thoughts: Choose Health and Strength Over Just Weight Loss

Look, I get it. The promise of effortless weight loss is tempting. But quick fixes often come with long-term consequences. Instead of chasing another trendy medication, why not focus on getting your body back in balance—naturally?

Midlife isn’t the time to shrink yourself—it’s the time to get stronger, healthier, and more energized than ever. When you focus on real health, weight loss becomes a side effect—not the main goal. And that’s a transformation worth investing in.

So, tell me—what’s your next step toward lasting health and strength?

Embracing Midlife: A New Chapter of Health and Vitality

When I transitioned from the precise, calculated world of civil engineering to helping midlife women transform their health, I wasn’t just changing careers—I was answering a call. Like many of you, I’ve experienced how life in our 40s and beyond can feel like an uphill battle. Weight creeps up regardless what you try to keep it off, energy dips, and our bodies seem to rebel against our best efforts. But here’s what most people don’t realize: midlife isn’t the beginning of decline. It’s the start of a powerful new chapter—one where we can reclaim control over our health, happiness, and vitality.

The Hidden Challenges of Midlife Health

Midlife brings unique health challenges that often go undiscussed. Did you know that over 70% of midlife women experience weight gain, with hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause being a significant contributor? Estrogen levels drop, leading to increased fat storage, especially around the abdomen.

Additionally, nearly 30% of women aged 45-65 develop high cholesterol levels, elevating their risk for cardiovascular disease.

Hormonal imbalances don’t just affect weight. Low thyroid function, imbalanced cortisol, and insulin resistance are common issues that cause fatigue, mood swings, and metabolic slowdowns. Studies show that insulin sensitivity decreases with age, making it harder for our bodies to process carbohydrates efficiently.

And yet, the solution isn’t in restrictive diets or overexercising—it’s in understanding what our bodies need.

Celebrating Midlife with Personalized Nutrition and Fitness

Midlife isn’t something to fear—it’s a time to celebrate the wisdom and strength we’ve gained. But our health strategies need to evolve with us. That’s where I come in. My approach focuses on personalized solutions, not one-size-fits-all plans.

Every program I offer starts with a deep dive into your health first. I analyze your blood work to identify imbalances in hormones, cholesterol, or other key markers. Based on these insights, I design a tailored nutrition plan, suggest supplements to support your body’s needs, and craft a workout routine that matches your energy levels and goals. This approach ensures we target the root causes of your challenges, not just the symptoms.

For example:

Balancing Hormones Naturally: By incorporating nutrient-rich foods and strategic meal timing, we can stabilize blood sugar and reduce cortisol spikes.

Strength Training for Longevity: After 40, we lose about 1% of muscle mass per year. Regular strength training builds muscle, boosts metabolism, and improves bone density, protecting against osteoporosis.

Mindful Eating Over Dieting: Diets often fail because they’re unsustainable. Instead, I focus on enjoying balanced meals that fuel your body and mind while reducing cravings.

Real Solutions for Real Women

My 12-Week Full Body Transformation Program is my signature program for a reason. It designed specifically for midlife women ready to rewrite their health story. It’s not just about weight loss; it’s about transforming health metrics like cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and energy. And to help you get started, I offer a complimentary consultation to see if it’s the right fit for you.

COMPLIMENTARY 30 MINS HEALTH ASSESSMENT

One of my clients, for example, came in struggling with weight gain, fatigue, and joint pain. Through personalized nutrition, blood work analysis, and strength training, we balanced her hormones and helped her lose 15 pounds while improving her cholesterol and energy levels. She didn’t just feel better—she rediscovered herself.

A New Stage Worth Celebrating

Midlife is a unique and powerful stage of life. By focusing on the right strategies—balancing hormones, eating intuitively, and staying strong—we can not only overcome health challenges but thrive. I’ve seen firsthand how women in their 40s, 50s, and beyond can transform their health and reclaim their confidence.

Are you ready to make midlife your best chapter yet?

The post Why Midlife Women Gain Weight and How to Reclaim Your Health Through Personalized Plans first appeared on Doing Everything Right… But Still Can’t Lose Weight After 40?.

The post Why Midlife Women Gain Weight and How to Reclaim Your Health Through Personalized Plans appeared first on Doing Everything Right… But Still Can’t Lose Weight After 40?.

The Doctor’s Advice That Didn’t Work

When Maria, 58 and recently post-menopausal, walked into my studio, she was desperate. Her doctor had just called with the results of her latest blood test, and her cholesterol levels were higher than ever. “You need to cut out fat—especially saturated fat,” her doctor warned.

So, Maria listened. She swapped her morning eggs for oatmeal, abandoned butter for margarine, and avoided red meat like the plague. She started eating low-fat everything: yogurt, cereal bars, crackers. But the pounds kept creeping up, her cholesterol didn’t budge, and she was constantly hungry.

Maria was frustrated. “I’m doing everything they tell me, and it’s not working. What am I missing?”

That’s when I asked her one simple question: “Have you ever wondered if everything you’ve been told about fat is wrong?”

Her skeptical look said it all. But by the end of our conversation, Maria realized that saturated fat wasn’t the villain it was made out to be—and her health transformation was just beginning.

If this story sounds familiar, and you’re struggling with cholesterol and weight gain, I invite you to book a complimentary health assessment at my studio in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada or online (you can live any where in Canada). Together, we’ll uncover what’s really going on in your body and design a plan that works for YOU.

The Big Misconception About Saturated Fat

For decades, saturated fat has been public enemy number one, blamed for heart disease, high cholesterol, and clogged arteries. It started in the 1950s with the infamous Seven Countries Study by Ancel Keys, which suggested a link between saturated fat intake and heart disease. What most people don’t know is that Keys cherry-picked his data to fit his hypothesis, ignoring countries where people ate plenty of saturated fat but had low rates of heart disease.

Fast forward to today, and this myth persists—largely thanks to the processed food industry and outdated dietary guidelines. Low-fat products flooded the market, and saturated fat became the scapegoat. But here’s the kicker: while we’ve been reducing saturated fat intake for decades, rates of heart disease and obesity have skyrocketed.

Even more fascinating? Our ancestors, who thrived on diets rich in animal fats, didn’t suffer from the same epidemics of heart disease. So, if saturated fat is the problem, why didn’t it kill them?

Science Break: What Does Saturated Fat Actually Do?

Let’s set the record straight: saturated fat isn’t a dietary boogeyman. It plays an essential role in your body, especially as a woman in midlife. Here’s how:

Hormone Production:
Cholesterol, much of which comes from saturated fat, is the raw material your body uses to produce hormones like estrogen. When estrogen levels drop during midlife, your body’s demand for cholesterol increases.

Energy Source:
Saturated fats provide a stable energy source, unlike the sugar spikes and crashes from low-fat processed foods.

LDL Particle Size:
Here’s the crucial part: not all LDL (“bad cholesterol”) is created equal. Large, fluffy LDL particles are mostly harmless, while small, dense LDL particles are linked to a higher risk of heart disease. Studies show that eating healthy saturated fats actually promotes the larger, less harmful LDL particles.

Inflammation:
Saturated fat itself isn’t the problem—it’s when LDL cholesterol oxidizes in the presence of inflammation that the real damage occurs.

Let’s bust another myth: dietary saturated fat has minimal impact on your cholesterol levels. In fact, your liver produces about 75–80% of your cholesterol, and it adjusts production based on your diet. Blaming saturated fat for high cholesterol is like blaming the fireman at the scene of a fire.

Midlife, Cholesterol, and Hormones

Midlife and especially post-menopausal time is a game-changer. When your ovaries stop producing estrogen, your body scrambles to maintain balance. Cholesterol levels naturally rise during this time, not because your body is malfunctioning, but because it’s trying to compensate.

Doctors often interpret this rise as dangerous, but here’s the nuance: higher cholesterol levels don’t always mean higher risk of heart disease. In fact, some research suggests that higher cholesterol in older women might even correlate with longer lifespans.

The real danger isn’t total cholesterol—it’s chronic inflammation and LDL oxidation. And here’s the twist: a diet rich in low-fat processed foods and devoid of healthy saturated fats often worsens these underlying issues.

Practical Takeaways: Redefining Healthy Fats

If you’re ready to stop fearing fat and start embracing it, here’s how to do it the right way:

Choose Quality Fats:

Opt for grass-fed butter, coconut oil, ghee, and fatty cuts of meat from pasture-raised animals.

Balance with unsaturated fats from olive oil, avocados, and nuts.

Ditch Low-Fat Processed Foods:
These are often loaded with sugar and chemicals, which drive inflammation and LDL oxidation.

Reduce Inflammation:

Pair saturated fats with an anti-inflammatory diet rich in vegetables, berries, and omega-3s from fish.

Minimize processed carbs and seed oils, which are far more damaging to your cholesterol profile than saturated fat ever could be.

Test, Don’t Guess:
Get your LDL particle size and inflammation markers (like CRP) checked. These give a clearer picture of your cardiovascular health than total cholesterol ever will.

Maria’s Transformation

With this new understanding, Maria made some key changes to her diet. She brought back eggs and grass-fed butter, swapped low-fat snacks for real, whole foods, and focused on reducing inflammation through a nutrient-dense diet. Three months later, her follow-up blood test told a different story. Her LDL particle size had shifted toward the larger, fluffier type, her inflammation markers dropped, and her energy was through the roof. But the best part? Maria finally stopped fearing food. She felt empowered, not restricted.

Ready to Rewrite Your Health Story?

If you’ve been stuck in the low-fat, high-frustration cycle like Maria, it’s time to break free. Let’s uncover what’s really holding you back and create a plan tailored to YOUR body and your needs. Book your complimentary health assessment today and take the first step toward feeling stronger, healthier, and more confident in midlife and beyond.

The post Saturated Fat: Friend or Foe?

Imagine this: You’re busy juggling life—work, family, and, hopefully, a little time for yourself. But as the years go by, you might notice that your body doesn’t get back as easily, especially when it comes to energy, injuries and strength. Maybe your skin feels less firm, or joint aches show up where they never did before. And the question arises in your head: “Am I doing enough to support my body through these times of my life?”

For many women in midlife, protein is often the missing piece of the health puzzle. While you’ve probably heard that protein is important for building muscle, it’s equally essential for maintaining healthy skin, strong bones, and balanced hormones. At the heart of protein’s power are amino acids—the building blocks that help the body heal and repair itself.

Here’s the tricky part: as we age, our bodies become less efficient at digesting and absorbing protein from food. This makes it harder to obtain the essential amino acids needed for daily healing, cell repair, and muscle maintenance. And since our bodies can’t produce these essential amino acids on their own, we must get them directly from our diet.

This is where protein powders come in as a convenient and supportive option. Many protein powders contain “predigested” or hydrolyzed proteins, which means they’re already broken down into smaller, more absorbable parts. This makes it easier for your body to use these proteins quickly and efficiently—exactly when you need them most. For women in midlife, protein powders can be a game-changer, filling nutritional gaps and helping you feel stronger, more resilient, and ready to take on whatever life throws your way.

Why Protein Matters More Now Than Ever

Protein is crucial at any stage of life, but for women in midlife, it’s a game-changer. As we age, our bodies naturally lose muscle mass and strength—this is called sarcopenia. Protein plays a big role in slowing this process down. It’s not just about muscle, either; protein supports everything from skin elasticity to joint strength, helping you feel more vibrant and resilient.

While getting protein from food is ideal, it’s not always easy to eat enough to meet your body’s needs, especially if you’re balancing a busy life. That’s where protein powders can come in handy. They provide a quick, reliable way to boost your intake and offer specific types that target different health goals.

Types of Protein Powders and How They Help

Whey Protein
Whey protein is popular because it’s complete—meaning it contains all essential amino acids. It’s quickly absorbed, so it’s great for muscle recovery after exercise. But some research has pointed to potential downsides with long-term, high-dose use of whey, such as kidney strain for those with existing conditions. If you’re looking for short-term benefits, like faster muscle repair, whey is effective, but using it in moderation is key.

Collagen Protein
Did you know that collagen makes up about one-third of the protein in your body? Collagen powders can be incredibly beneficial for midlife women, as they support skin elasticity, joint comfort, and even bone strength. Collagen powder doesn’t contain all essential amino acids, but it’s still a powerful addition for overall wellness. Look for high-quality, pure collagen sources for the best results.

Plant-Based Protein
For those who prefer plant-based options, protein powders made from peas, hemp, or brown rice offer solid alternatives. They’re lower in allergens and suitable for those who are lactose intolerant or have dietary restrictions. Pea protein, for example, has been shown to support muscle gain on par with whey when combined with strength training. And hemp protein is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which support heart health.

Casein Protein
Casein is another milk-based protein but releases amino acids more slowly, making it ideal for keeping you full longer. Many people enjoy casein in the evening to support muscle repair overnight.

Choosing the Right Protein Powder for You

When it comes to selecting a protein powder, quality is everything. Lower-quality powders may contain fillers, added sugars, or even contaminants. If you’re looking for high-quality, professional-grade protein powder, Fullscript is an excellent source. Fullscript’s selection includes protein powders that are rigorously tested and trusted by healthcare providers. You’ll find options free of unwanted additives, so you’re getting pure, effective protein to support your wellness goals.

LILIA’S PHARMACY – GET PROFESSIONAL GRADE SUPPLEMENTS TO YOUR DOOR

How Protein Powders Can Support Common Health Goals for Midlife Women

Weight Management
Protein can help curb appetite by making you feel fuller for longer. Studies have shown that protein supplements taken with meals can help manage weight by reducing overall caloric intake. If your goal is weight maintenance, adding a protein shake between meals or as a breakfast boost could help you feel satisfied longer.

Muscle Preservation and Joint Health
For women wanting to stay strong and active, muscle maintenance is crucial. Protein powders, particularly those with collagen, can help preserve muscle and support joint flexibility, making it easier to stay physically active as you age.

Skin and Bone Health
Collagen protein has a unique advantage here. As a natural protein found in the skin and bones, supplementing with collagen can promote smoother skin, support hydration, and strengthen bones. Including collagen in your daily routine can provide visible benefits over time, contributing to a more youthful, radiant appearance.

Making Protein Powder a Natural Part of Your Day

Integrating protein powder into your routine doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Here are some simple ways to get started:

Morning Smoothie: Blend a scoop of protein powder into a smoothie with fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats (like avocado or nut butter) for a nutrient-dense breakfast.

Quick Shake on the Go: Mix with water or milk for a quick post-workout boost or midday snack.

Mix into Recipes: Add to your oatmeal, yogurt, or baked goods like muffins for extra protein that feels like a treat.

Experiment with flavors and types until you find what you enjoy most. Many women find it easy to make protein powder a daily habit that fits seamlessly into their lifestyle.

Considering the Big Picture: Balance and Health First

While protein powders can be a fantastic tool for filling nutritional gaps, it’s essential to remember that they work best as part of a balanced diet filled with whole foods. Whole food sources of protein—like eggs, fish, lean meats, beans, and legumes—offer a variety of nutrients that protein powders simply can’t replicate.

There’s also a crucial element that often gets overlooked: chewing our food. As humans, we were designed to chew, and this simple act plays an important role in digestion. Chewing starts the digestive process, breaking down food into smaller pieces and mixing it with saliva, which contains enzymes that aid in breaking down carbohydrates and fats. This not only makes it easier for the body to absorb nutrients but also signals the stomach and intestines to prepare for proper digestion.

On the other hand, relying too heavily on liquid meals, like protein shakes, can bypass this natural process. While convenient, drinking our food doesn’t engage the same digestive signals, which could lead to less effective digestion over time. Plus, the act of chewing has psychological benefits—it slows us down, increases satisfaction from meals, and helps regulate appetite.

To find balance, consider using protein powders strategically, such as in a post-workout shake or as an occasional quick meal replacement on busy days. But make it a priority to incorporate whole, chewable foods into your meals. Savoring a hearty salad, enjoying a lean protein-rich meal, or even snacking on crunchy vegetables not only supports your digestion but also nurtures your connection to food and overall well-being.

Ultimately, the key is balance. Protein powders can be a helpful tool, but they should complement—not replace—a healthy, nutrient-rich diet built around whole foods that you chew, savor, and truly enjoy.

Final Thoughts: Finding What Works for You

Protein powders can be a valuable addition to a midlife wellness routine, especially when chosen carefully and used to complement a healthy lifestyle. Whether you’re aiming to build muscle, manage weight, or support your skin and bones, a high-quality protein powder can be a simple, effective way to reach your goals.

As you explore your options and find what works best, keep this question in mind: How could adding a little extra protein each day support the life you want to lead?

Once upon a time in a small town, there lived a woman named Lilia. As a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and fitness coach, Lilia had seen first-hand the struggles of midlife women caught in the never ending cycle of fad diets. Promising quick fixes, these diets often led to disappointment and a sense of failure. But this isn’t just Lilia’s story; it echoes the experiences of countless women around the globe.

The Harsh Reality of Dieting

For women in their 40s and beyond, the journey of maintaining a healthy weight can feel like navigating a labyrinth. Hormonal changes and a shifting metabolism transform the way our bodies respond to diet and exercise. Despite this, the wellness industry continues to push the latest diet trends – keto, paleo, intermittent fasting – as the be-all and end-all solutions. Yet, studies reveal a different story. According to research from the University of California, Los Angeles, as many as 66% of dieters regain more weight than they lost within four to five years (Mann et al., 2007). Furthermore, the National Eating Disorders Association highlights that dieting is a consistent predictor of future weight gain (2018).

The Myth of the Magic Pill

Many nutrition and fitness gurus sell diets as a magic pill. Eat this, not that, and voila – you’ll shed those pounds in no time. But they’re missing a crucial piece of the puzzle. It’s not just about losing weight; it’s about holistic health and understanding your body’s unique needs, particularly during the transformative midlife years.

Lilia’s Approach: A Journey to Balanced Health

This is where Lilia’s 12-week Full Body Transformation program comes into play. It’s not just another diet plan; it’s a comprehensive approach to help you, the midlife woman, understand and work with your body. Lilia offers a complimentary consultation to tailor the program to your unique needs, focusing on improving health metrics through balancing hormones and aiding weight loss.

Remember, it’s not just about the number on the scale. It’s about how you feel inside and out. Through her program, Lilia has seen remarkable transformations, not just physically, but in her clients’ overall well-being and attitude towards life.

Beyond the Scale: The Real Success Metrics

The success of Lilia’s approach is measured in more than just pounds lost. It’s about renewed energy, the balanced hormones, the improvement in mental health, and the overall quality of life. Isn’t it time we redefined success in terms of our health?

In a study by the American Psychological Association, it was found that exercise improves mood and mental health, which is a key component of Lilia’s program. And as per the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, a balanced diet can improve cardiovascular health – a major concern for many midlife women.

Schedule complimentary 30 min session with Lilia HERE

Conclusion: A New Chapter Awaits

So, as we close this chapter, let’s ask ourselves: are we ready to step off the endless diet treadmill and start a new journey towards real, sustainable health and wellness? Lilia’s Full Body Transformation program might just be the first step in that direction. Are you ready to redefine your health journey and discover what it truly means to feel good in your skin?

As women go through hormonal changes like menopause, they may experience a variety of symptoms that affect their digestive health, including bloating, gas, and acid reflux. While there are several factors that can contribute to these symptoms, one possible culprit is low levels of stomach acid, also known as hypochlorhydria. In this article, I’ll explore the benefits of an HCL challenge for women experiencing digestive issues during menopause.

What Is an HCL Challenge?

An HCL challenge is a simple and safe diagnostic test that can help determine if someone has hypochlorhydria (low acid in their stomach). During the test, a person takes hydrochloric acid (HCL) supplements with a meal and monitors their symptoms. If the supplements improve their symptoms, it’s likely they have low levels of stomach acid.

Research suggests that an HCL challenge can be an effective way to diagnose hypochlorhydria. In a study published in the Journal of Digestive Diseases, researchers found that the HCL challenge was a reliable method for identifying low levels of stomach acid. They noted that the test was safe, easy to administer, and provided accurate results.

How Does Hypochlorhydria Affect Digestive Health?

Low levels of stomach acid can contribute to a range of digestive problems, including bloating, gas, and acid reflux. When there isn’t enough acid in the stomach, food may not be broken down properly, which can lead to bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. This can cause gas and bloating. Additionally, low levels of stomach acid can cause the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) to relax, allowing acid to flow back up into the esophagus, causing acid reflux.

Research has shown that hypochlorhydria may be a contributing factor to functional dyspepsia, a common digestive disorder. In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, researchers found that 40% of participants with functional dyspepsia had low levels of stomach acid.

How Do I Know If I Need To Do An HCL Challenge?

If you experience frequent digestive issues such as bloating, gas, or heartburn, it may be worth considering an HCL challenge. Other symptoms that could indicate low HCL levels include undigested food in stools, bad breath, and an aversion to meat. However, it’s essential to note that these symptoms could also be due to other underlying health issues. Consulting a healthcare professional is always recommended before attempting any self-diagnosis or treatment.

What Is HCL?

HCL, or hydrochloric acid, is a crucial component in the digestive process. It’s produced in the stomach and helps to break down proteins into smaller components that can be more easily absorbed by the body. Without sufficient levels of HCL, the digestive system may struggle to digest food effectively, leading to the symptoms mentioned earlier.

How Do I Do An HCL Challenge?

To perform an HCL challenge, you’ll need to purchase HCL supplements, typically available in the form of capsules or tablets. Begin by consuming a meal that contains at least six ounces of protein, such as meat or fish. Take one HCL capsule or tablet and wait for 30 minutes. If you experience no discomfort, increase the dose by one capsule or tablet and wait another 30 minutes. Repeat this process, increasing the dose by one capsule or tablet each time, until you experience discomfort such as heartburn, bloating, or nausea. This discomfort indicates that you have reached your maximum HCL dosage, and you should reduce the dose by one capsule or tablet for your subsequent meals.

How Can an HCL Challenge Help Women in Menopause?

As women go through menopause, their hormone levels fluctuate, which can lead to changes in their digestive health. Research suggests that supplementing with HCL may be beneficial for individuals with hypochlorhydria. In a review published in the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, the authors noted that supplementing with HCL improved protein digestion and absorption in individuals with low levels of stomach acid.

By using an HCL challenge to diagnose hypochlorhydria, women in menopause can determine if low levels of stomach acid are contributing to their digestive symptoms. If hypochlorhydria is diagnosed, supplementing with HCL under the guidance of a healthcare provider may help improve digestion and alleviate symptoms.

Who Should Avoid an HCL Challenge?

While an HCL challenge is generally safe for most people, there are some individuals who should avoid it. People with a history of ulcers or other digestive problems should not take HCL supplements. Additionally, those who are taking proton pump inhibitors or other medications that reduce stomach acid should not do an HCL challenge, as it may interfere with their medication.

Conclusion

An HCL challenge can be an effective way to diagnose hypochlorhydria and help women in menopause manage their digestive symptoms. By supplementing with HCL under the guidance of a healthcare provider, women can improve their digestion and alleviate discomfort. However, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting an HCL supplement regimen to ensure it’s safe and appropriate for individual needs.

In order to speed up fat loss, so many women, including myself, have completely eliminated carbs from their diet.

However, for most women, especially over 45 the best fat loss results come from eating carbs rather than taking them out altogether. The specific fat-burning hormones that only respond when carbs are included in your diet are a big reason for this.

This is an important point to consider since hormones control whether you are a fat-burning powerhouse or simply a slimmer version of yourself with little change in body fat.

The truth is that anyone can lose weight by following a low-calorie diet. However, just because you’re losing weight doesn’t necessarily means you’re losing a lot of body fat. Hopefully, “losing weight” is not your main intention.

Here are the four most important hormones in the fat-burning event, and how avoiding carbohydrates slows down your fat loss:

Leptin, is known as the “fat-burning hormone,” is a hormone that helps you lose weight. When leptin levels are high, your body is signalling that it’s time to start burning body fat.

Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells. The more body fat you have, the more leptin is released by your body. When you start a fat-loss diet, the decrease in calories and loss of body fat naturally leads to lower levels of circulating leptin. Fat burning slows down when leptin levels are low.

Carbohydrate-rich meals are the most effective approach to maintain leptin levels high so you can continue to burn fat. On the other hand, a low-carb diet suppresses leptin, which stops fat burning.

Cortisol. You’ve definitely heard cortisol is the stress hormone that causes belly fat to develop. If you haven’t heard, cortisol is the stress hormone that causes belly fat to build.

When your body is put under any stress, it produces cortisol. When cortisol levels get too high, belly fat begins to develop.

Carbohydrates are necessary for maintaining cortisol homeostasis. Carbohydrates, in the form of glucose, offer a simple energy source for the body. When glucose levels are optimum, there is no need for a stress reaction to create energy.

However, when carbohydrate intake is maintained to a minimum, there is less readily accessible glucose to be used. Cortisol is released in this case to free stored energy (your glycogen stores) and deliver the glucose required to keep you functioning. Cortisol continues to be released as a result of low energy levels, as is the case with consistently low carb diets, resulting in the growth of belly fat.

Thyroid Hormone. The thyroid gland produces this hormone, which is responsible for your metabolic rate. In other words, healthy thyroid hormone levels keep your metabolism revving, but low thyroid hormone levels prevent fat burning.

So, low carb diets cause thyroid hormone levels to drop, putting a stop to your fat-burning efforts and slowing down your metabolism.

Insulin. When you consume carbs, they are broken down into glucose and your blood sugar rises. This tells your pancreas to start producing insulin. Insulin’s duty is to transport sugar from the bloodstream to muscle cells, making insulin an anabolic hormone.

Your muscle cells eventually get “filled up” and can no longer take in any more sugar. Insulin stores the remaining energy in body fat once your muscle cells are no longer taking sugar. There’s a reason why insulin is called “fat storing hormone”.

The low carb diet was created with the idea that if carbohydrates are removed from the diet, blood sugar would remain low and insulin will be under control, and fat storage will be avoided. This works to some extent, and brief bursts with very few carbohydrates can help you lose weight, but it’s not the most efficient approach to keep your fat loss going for the course of your diet.

Do you know what “Insulin Sensitivity” is? Insulin sensitivity refers to your muscle cells’ (glycogen stores) willingness to receive insulin (the hormone that transports blood sugar) so that it can be distributed efficiently. Sugars get deposited in the proper spot (muscle cells) when you’re insulin sensitive, and they don’t get stored as body fat.

Carbohydrates have the biggest impact on insulin. If you go too long without eating any carbs and don’t get enough insulin spikes, your muscle cells will begin to reject insulin, resulting in insulin resistance. When you have insulin resistance, your body goes into fat storage mode.

For best fat-burning results, all four of the mentioned hormones must be in balance. You may say goodbye to fat burning if any of them are out of balance. And when you cut carbs too low for too long, you run the risk of hormonal imbalance.

So don’t be afraid of carbohydrates; instead, use them wisely and strategically to boost your fat loss.

One of the main functions of the small butterfly-shaped thyroid gland (in the neck just in front of the windpipe) is to produce hormones that help regulate the body’s metabolism.

However, metabolism is not the only one, those little hormones aka messengers also play a part in breathing, heart rate, body temperature, and muscle strength, beside many other vital functions!

These hormones are called triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) and many of the body’s functions slow down when the thyroid doesn’t produce enough of them.

What Factors Affect Thyroid Health?

Just like the many functions that the thyroid plays a part in, the factors that can affect its health and proper functioning are many as well.

Among these factors are:

Fluctuating hormone levels throughout the menstrual cycle

Stress and sickness

Lack of sleep or poor quality sleep

Dieting and/or changes in diet

Mineral levels – iodine and selenium

Gut parasites and leaky gut syndrome

Certain medications that may interfere with thyroid hormone levels, or with their action, potentially altering TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) as the body attempts to compensate for too low (or too high) thyroid hormone activity

What Is An Underactive Thyroid?

This is quite simply when your thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone to maintain proper gland function. It is also referred to as hypothyroidism.

Common signs of an underactive thyroid

Tiredness (sometimes extreme)

Weight gain or weight loss resistance

Depression and mood swings

Cold sensitivity

Dry skin and hair

Muscle and joint aches

Who develops an underactive thyroid?

Both men and women can have an underactive thyroid, although it is more common in women. Children can also develop this condition and some babies are even born with it.

Most cases are caused either by the immune system attacking the thyroid gland and damaging it or when damage occurs during treatment for an overactive thyroid or thyroid cancer.

What are other thyroid disorders?

Hyperactive thyroid and Grave’s Disease

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (autoimmune hypothyroid disease)

Goiter

Thyroid nodules

Thyroid cancer

4 Lifestyle Tips to Help Manage An Underactive Thyroid

Symptoms of an underactive thyroid are often similar to those of other health conditions, and because they usually develop slowly, you may not notice them for years.

While prevention or reversing this condition requires a more involved protocol, it IS possible to effectively manage it by improving upon several lifestyle factors.

Exercise regularly and keep body weight in check

Manage stress – Yoga has been proven to positively impact hypothyroidism

Eat thyroid supporting foods and take your minerals

Decrease alcohol intake – a general health recommendation

Something that you must understand is that medication may still be necessary even if you’re doing your due diligence with all of the above factors.

However, a qualified and knowledgeable Healthcare Practitioner (you can book a diagnostic health assessment with me here) is key to most effectively manage this condition, and you should ask to be tested for an underactive thyroid if you’re experiencing some of the common symptoms.

Part of the treatment for an underactive thyroid usually involves taking daily hormone replacement, but again, be sure to consult a qualified Healthcare Practitioner before taking any medication or even supplements that claim to support thyroid health.

As many cases of an underactive thyroid are caused by autoimmune issues, this usually signals underlying inflammation. Turning to foods that reduce that inflammation and support the immune system is crucial.
